Toilet Piece: What is Crowding Your Mind?

These are a series of interactive installations in toilets around Vienna. The series began in Dublin last year as part of a larger commissioned production (through the Arts Council and Kirkos Ensemble) with dancer Alice Presencer and myself, in which one's feelings of overload was depicted musically and visually.

This interactive installation aims to create a private space of anonymity within a public context; gathering words, thoughts and drawings from the hearts and minds of the public.

After establishing this series in Dublin last year at Unit 44 in Dublin, I am eager to bring this series outside of Ireland to collect artistic representations from the public and connect with citizens in other countries. Having established strong artistic connections in Vienna over the past year, I have teamed up with visual artist, Carmen Kalata and cellist, Antonio Chorbadzhiyski who are producing the work alongside me in Vienna. Irish videographer, Luke Brabazon will create a short documentary of the process as we create a journey through Vienna's architectural maze, presenting the installations in some of Vienna's finest buildings to its hidden underground spaces.

Each of the four institutes of Vienna’s Fine Arts Academy will host installations and will be the centre piece for this series.

The material from each of the toilets will be taken down in September and exhibited at the Fine Arts Academy, alongside an improvised musical performance by cellist, Antonio Chorbadzhiyski and myself at the launch of the exhibit.

During the exhibition, musicians, artists and non-artists are invited to engage with the work through impromptu improvisations in a response to the art they see before them. The hope is to continue the thread of public engagement with art in spontaneous and innovative ways.

This series is supported kindly by Culture Ireland.
